La Vallon (the Island). Acrylic on Canvas. 24″x 18″. 2016
This new series of paintings and (soon to be) drawings is based off of images taken with a dissecting and an electron microscope of a piece of coral found on in Ft. Lauderdale. The mundane object served as a souvenir of personal experience, a reunion with my sister after a long absence from each other’s lives. On the microscopic level the thing yielded images that were reminiscent of Romantic paintings of mountains trying to scrape the sublime, while being itself a kind of mausoleum of another creature or rather colony of creatures outside of the human experience.
